When we think of cancer, we often don’t think or talk about how it affects one’s sexual life. In fact, this topic itself is even considered taboo to talk about in some cultures and families. However, understanding the sexual health and interpersonal implications of cancer is very important as it greatly affects the cancer patient as well. This topic is so important because during treatment it is so important for the patient to feel loved, supported, worthy, and not alone.
Body changes caused by cancer is one of the main reasons for insecurity in dating. A lot of people struggle to accept themselves as their body changes (hair-loss, scars, breast removals, ostomies) from this condition. Additionally, a lot of patients lose interest in their sexual life due to medications such as opioids or due to mental stress once they encounter cancer. This not only leads to self-image issues, but also mental health related conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, etc. Women may experience decreased estrogen levels from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery of gynecologic cancers, and hormone therapy which lead to delayed periods, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and many other vaginal conditions that cause discomfort. Similarly, hormone and radiation therapy can decrease testosterone levels in men as well causing erectile dysfunction. Some surgeries for penile, rectal, prostate, testicular, and other pelvic cancers can even affect the nerves affecting erections.
How can you support cancer patients and what can be done to minimize cancer’s effects on sexual health and dating? The first step is to be active in treatments. Do your own research and also consult your oncologist on the different treatment options that best will fit your situation. Use contraceptives and condoms. Since chemotherapy traces can be found in semen, learn how to properly protect yourself and partner from its effects. Try counseling and get support. Reach out to resources related to therapy and counseling to share your thoughts and feelings with support groups. These will likely help you find ways to cope better with side effects and treatment. Always remind your loved ones and yourself that you are worthy and loved. Try to be positive and find ways you can become the best version of yourself; these could be anything that makes you feel attractive and confident. Be open to change! Every experience in life teaches you something very important and is part of your journey that defines you!
